She's an adjunct staff member at the Shalem Institute for spiritual formation in the southeast region and is actively involved with the youth in her church, teaching Sunday School and leading Pilgrimage. Weaving, her garden, and her grandson are her grounding joys.
Sometimes we beat ourselves up for not having the ideal spiritual life or even for not having a relationship with the Lord that resembles someone else’s. Perhaps we just aren’t paying enough attention to the intricate interplay between our personality and our own spirituality. In this seminar we’ll consider issues related to temperament, wiring, and spirituality experimenting with a variety of ancient Christian contemplative practices to see which of these might help us grow closer in intimacy with the Risen Lord Jesus who is present and actively involved in our everyday wake-up, walk-around, work-a-day world.
Come and explore spiritual direction in the context of community. We’ll gather in prayer to listen for God’s guidance. Just as we can reflect on the quality of our relationships with friends, family members, colleagues, and others, we can also reflect on our relationship with God—opening ourselves to God’s presence or the nudges of his Spirit. Unlike so many of our other encounters, we’re neither giving nor receiving instruction or advice—we’re truly praying together and speaking out of that prayer. These sessions should be of immediate blessing, and they may also serve as a model for future work in church communities with youth and others.
Poetry can be an incredible entry point in revealing our longings and in opening them to God in prayer. This is a time to listen deeply to our own emerging prayer using the written words of others. Poems will be provided, and the time will include introduction, facilitation, sharing, and silence.
